Why try couples therapy?
Couples therapy can be beneficial for a wide range of concerns including communication issues, problems with sexual intimacy, and disconnection between partners.
Many individuals struggle with shutting down or becoming emotionally overwhelmed when faced with conflict. With the support of a therapist, you can work to change these responses so that you and your partner can meet each other with patience and empathy.
How does couples therapy help?
One helpful aspect of couples therapy includes gaining a clear understanding of communication patterns and styles. In treatment, you and your partner will explore the different ways you respond to one another, where your responses stem from and how that may be contributing to your relationship issues.
Couples therapy can also help you and your partner uncover factors that may be affecting intimacy and explore ways to increase closeness to create a more fulfilling sexual relationship.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I start couples therapy if I'm also in individual therapy?
Yes, couples therapy and individual therapy focus on different aspects of you and your relationship, so they can be done at the same time. However, we recommend discussing this with your therapist(s) first to determine how to best ensure they work well together.
Is it only joint sessions or separate as well?
At Bloor West Therapy, our approach is to only have couples sessions where both partners join. We find that this is integral to ensuring transparency and addressing issues fully. Other practices may offer a combination of joint and individual sessions.
